Creating a competitive and value-driven organizational model for offshore wind farms
A few years ago, I worked with an offshore wind farm owner facing the challenge of developing a long-term Operations & Maintenance (O&M) strategy to ensure their license to operate and maintain the integrity of their offshore assets. For the owner, it was essential to maximize the asset’s lifespan and use it to its full potential. OutSmart, in collaboration with its partners, was tasked with providing strategic advice.
We began by identifying the company’s objectives, both from the shareholders and the project team perspective. We categorized and prioritized these objectives, which ranged from ensuring safety and achieving a positive EBITDA, to increasing technical availability and incorporating innovation.
Based on these objectives, we drafted various O&M models for both the windturbines and the Balance of Plant (BoP). Once these models were developed, we validated them against the company’s business goals. Together with the owner, we created an overview of the pros and cons of each O&M model, ensuring that all relevant objectives were considered.
A tailored O&M Model for offshore wind farms: balancing innovation and asset integrity
A well-suited O&M model is essential for safeguarding both the asset’s integrity and the financial stability of the project. I understand the challenges in determining a procurement strategy. Based on the owner’s objectives, we proposed a model in which some activities would be performed in-house, while others would be outsourced. We also defined the scope for the market request.
The result: a robust strategy
By taking this comprehensive approach, we assisted the wind farm owner in establishing a robust and suitable long-term O&M strategy.
